Expanding Housing: The Summit and Village (at Avon)
A major multi-family project, The Summit, has broken ground downtown. It includes 164 units—144 market-rate and 20 affordable—and 5,000 square feet for commercial space, built over two levels of underground parking adjacent to major transit points. Local government has committed nearly $12 million in public financing toward it. This is part of a broader trend: Avon continues to prioritize mixed-use developments that combine housing and retail in places like East Avon. One example is amendments to the “Village (at Avon)” planned unit development, which include improvements to roads, enhanced infrastructure standards, and commitment to housing near amenities.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Public Spaces
The town is also advancing several capital improvement projects.
• The West Beaver Creek Boulevard Bridge Deck Repairs are underway through early November, aiming to improve safety and durability of a key crossing.
• Harry A. Nottingham Park is being refreshed with updated pathways, new seating walls, and parking layout upgrades to support both daily use and special events.
• A redesign of the Pedestrian Mall is planned to enhance the civic plaza in front of Town Hall and improve crosswalks, especially at Mikaela Way and Lake Street, to boost walkability and make public spaces more welcoming.
Community Housing & Planning Policy Updates
Avon’s decision-makers have taken steps to align long-term policy with housing needs. The most recent Community Housing Plan amendments list pending projects and strategies to maintain affordability and support local workers. Action includes identifying town-owned land for housing, revising deed restrictions, and seeking financing models that reduce the cost burden on renters and prospective homeowners.
Flock Cameras Raise Questions on Transparency & Oversight
Some Avon residents are voicing concerns over continued use of Flock vehicle surveillance cameras—even after the formal contract with the vendor expired. Residents are calling for clarity on how data is stored, shared, and used, as well as safeguards against misuse. Public debate at council meetings underscores a rising demand for transparency and ethical data governance.
What’s at Stake & What’s Next
These projects reflect Avon’s push to grow responsibly, but they also reveal tension points. Affordability remains a top concern: ensuring that workforce housing keeps pace with rising costs. Infrastructure demands increase with denser development, and residents’ expectations for accountability in public tools like surveillance cameras are rising. Avon’s continued engagement with the public through planning forums, policy revisions, and town council hearings will shape how well the town balances growth with community values.
